Hong Kong is worth going

ImageFashion Access is one of the largest international fairs presenting shoes and leather goods. The fair takes place twice a year in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and it is a part of the APLF (Asia Pacific Leather Fairs). Contrary to similar exhibitions in Europe, which on relatively small space fight for a place in the calendar of fairs...

...and for their share on the market, Hong Kong is quite outstanding in its position. Thanks to the historical process, it has become economical and business centre of Asia and it keeps on strengthening its position. The very same trend goes for leather and shoe industry.

ImageMainly because of the low quality imports to Europe, Asia is perceived as a territory of cheap labour force, which floods the rest of the world with its production and for this reason, most European companies do not even think about penetrating this market. It is very important to realize the position of Hong Kong not only in relation to the whole Asia, but also towards for example Russia, South America or Australia, which does not have its own fair for the leather sector.
Typical example can be the fact that after the crises with SARS, the APLF fairs recorded an invasion of important companies from Italy, Germany and Spain. However, they did not come here to underbid with their price. They successfully introduced the best from their collections. In other words, also this part of world is interested in quality and fashionable products, seeking them right in Hong Kong.

ImageOn Fashion Access, the buyers can meet suppliers of shoes, handbags, luggage, leather goods and fashion accessories from the whole world. They can find here large offer of fashion trends from classical to top fashion, from middle priced to very luxurious products.

On this March fair, 900 exhibitors from 35 countries and regions are expected and more than 20 000 visitors from 70 countries have pre-registered. More than 140 exhibitors from Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan and Turkey will introduce their collections of leather and fur garments. Traditionally, most interest generates the leather goods, mainly handbags together with fashion accessories, belts or even jewellery.

ImageThe popular competition “Best of APLF Award” is an opportunity to find eminent exhibitors. In the competition Footwear Design Hong Kong 2007, the visitors can see works of talented shoe designers. The very new, on-line competition “Design a bag” has developed into a fierce fight and the international professional jury has already a lot of work to do.

Most supporting programs are dedicated to fashion and presentation of fashion trends. Fashion Trends Lounge will be presenting new products for the autumn and winter season 2007/8 and will help the visitors to direct their attention to the best collections exhibited on the fair. Material Trends Lounge will present fashion tendencies and trendy colours in materials for the spring and summer season 2008.

Fashion Avenue is an exclusive fashion show of designs and top models of the best quality from prestigious shoe and leather products brands. Leading personalities of the fashion industry will participate on the trend seminars to reveal hot themes in fashion already for seasons in the year 2008.

Together with Fashion Access at the same time and place, the exhibition MMT (Material, Manufacturing and Technology) will be held, this year in its 23rd edition. The fair covers full spectrum from rawhides to finished leathers, through dyes and chemicals, to machinery and CAD/CAM system. There are 1800 exhibitors from 59 countries expected to participate at the fair and 28 000 professionals from 110 have registered to visit the fair.

Image“We have been participating on the APLF for 20 years now and thanks to that we have found important clients in USA and Canada,” said Nigel Dobson from Astley Leathers in New Zealand. Umberto Saccelli, president of Brasilian tanners’ Association (CICB) has remarked that participation of 40 Brazilian companies introduced more than 50 % of total tannery production in Brazil. “Hong Kong is for Brazil very important as a selling point for the whole Asia. Brazilian tanneries sell leathers from here to China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea”, added Mr. Saccelli. Mr. Rodney Lee, president of Old Trend, also spoke in superlatives and he was very happy about an order from Venezuela in total value 200 000USD.

Next APLF will be held in Hong Kong from 28. – 30. 3. 2007.
